Preparing for Your Procedure

MRI
Preparation for the MRI experience: Most scans require little or no preparation or specialized diet or fasting. Further questions may be asked by the Technologist or Radiologist supervising your study. You will be asked to change to a gown (if necessary) and remove all metal objects. Please leave all metal valuables at home if possible. Please inform the Technologist if you have ever been exposed to metal flying fragments, either from work (i.e. welding) or by accidents. If so, it might be necessary to obtain an x-ray of your eye region before your MRI scan.

CT(CAT scan) Computerized Tomography
Preparation for CT exam:  The preparation varies depending upon the part being scanned. We do require that you have nothing to eat or drink 4 Hours PRIOR to your exam, except for your regular medications. If you take GLUCOPHAGE or have severe allergies please call for specific instructions. Please bring a current list of all medications you are currently taking. If your CT exam is of the ABDOMEN or PELVIS region, it is necessary to pick up contrast from our department at leas at 12 Hours before your exam. Drink the entire container prior to your exam. Do not eat or drink anything else until your exam is completed.

Ultrasound
Preparation for Ultrasound: Please dress comfortably, however, you may be asked to wear a hospital gown. For ABDOMINAL Ultrasounds, you can not eat or drink after midnight prior to your exam. However, you can take your regular medications. For your PELVIC Ultrasound, you must have a full bladder prior to your exam. Drink 4 glasses of fluid (8 oz each) PRIOR to your exam. DO NOT EMPTY YOUR BLADDER PRIOR TO THE EXAM. For an OB Ultrasound; 1st trimester please drink 3 glasses of water (8 oz each) one hour PRIOR to exam; 2nd trimester please drink 2 glasses of water (8 oz each) 30 minutes PRIOR to exam. DO NOT EMPTY YOUR BLADDER PRIOR TO THE EXAM.
